FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: TROY TULOWITZKI SS TORONTO BLUE JAYS

By Melvin Brizuela

Oh Troy Tulowitzki.  Every year he beats up starting pitchers with authority but every year he ends up on the DL. There is no consensus opinion on Tulo.  One manager might hate him for his propensity to get hurt and another might tout him for his immense ability and overall ceiling in one of the games shallowest positions.  One month into the season and Tulo has remained healthy but he has failed to generate much offense.  Let’s dive into the numbers and figure out why.

After being a top 2 round selection in fantasy drafts for the last few years, Tulo saw his value drop down to the 5-7 round range.  Many owners took a flyer on him knowing that his potential screams top 2 round value and the sheer fact that he would have a full season hitting in the middle of one of the league’s best offenses.

Tulo is currently hitting .160 (#193 among qualifying hitters) with 5 homeruns, 13 RBI’s, and 8 runs scored to go along with a measly .267 OBP (#174) and .320 SLG (#169).

So what’s wrong?  For starters, Tulo’s BABIP is at an incredibly unlucky .160 and his K rate is up to 28.4%.  His career norms are .318 and 16.7% respectively.  His Soft, Med, and Hard hit rates are slightly different with his Med rate up a little and his Hard rate down a little from career averages.  However, Tulo is being more patient at the plate this year with his BB % up.  With an eventual BABIP turnaround, Tulo will be back to his normal rates in no time.  He is healthy, has great lineup protection, and is hitting in one of the best hitter’s parks in the league.  Considering that his Soft, Med, Hard rates are not drastically shifted, his hits will start finding spots to land.  The power has been very nice with 5 homeruns already which is on pace for around 23 homeruns if he plays 130 games.  Hold tight and even try to buy low from a panicked owner.
