FANTASY BASEBALL STOCK WATCH: STEVEN MATZ FULLY LOCKED IN HEADING INTO SEASON

A few weeks ago in this space, we talked about how New York Mets top lefty pitching prospect Steven Matz was struggling badly, with the latest beat down coming against the Miami Marlins that soared his spring ERA to over 7.00.  Fighting control and elevation on his pitches, Matz looked like nothing like the ace who absolutely dominated in Las Vegas of all places last season prior to his very good but injury-plagued run with the Mets once promoted.  Citing some mechanical issues, there was no talk of Matz  not beginning the season with the Mets but there was concern nonetheless given how young he was.  Well those worries were firmly put the rest over the last two weeks as Matz has been completely locked in pitching-wise, with him putting the topper on his spring with five hitless innings and six strikeouts against the Cubs in his final exhibition start.  Matz has now given up just one run on one hit in his last 9.2 innings for the team and heads into the season as fine-tuned as a pitcher can get.  Matz has still battled his control which is not surprising since most hard-throwing youngsters do so but his stuff has proven to be very hard to hit going back to last season.  While we do have to worry about the high rate of injuries Matz has suffered in his young career (which includes a Tommy John procedure), there is no denying how high his ceiling goes and he could end up being a near-ace this season if he can stay in one piece.
