FANTASY BASEBALL CRISIS POINT: ADAM WAINWRIGHT SP ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

Yeah we could have told you so.  In fact we did many, many times over.  We of course referring to the absolute trainwreck of a campaign being engineered by St. Louis Cardinals ace SP Adam Wainwright who goes into Monday's games toting an ungodly 8.27 ERA and 1.90 WHIP while striking out just 7 batters in 16.1 innings.  Clearly Wainwright is not fooling anyone right now in his return from a torn Achilles that virtually wiped out his entire 2015 campaign.  At the age of 34 and with a ton of innings on an arm that has undergone Tommy John surgery, it is not a stretch to wonder if Wainwright is finished as a top-end player.  Well if you had followed us going back to 2014, we began this conversation during that time as Wainwright was giving off classic signs that he was headed for a fall.  We cited the drop in velocity Wainwright began exhibiting which has continued on this year as well.  In addition, we talked about how Wainwright is losing "juice"  when it comes to the power of his pitches and that has shot up his hit rate and lowered the K rate.  The decrease in Wainwright's K rate is a big problem as he is currently at a pathetic 3.86 which is pretty much as bad as it gets and shows you how diminished his stuff is.  This from a guy who twice struck out 200 or more batters in a season back in his ace heyday.  Right now Wainwright is not even SP 3 worthy and is clearly more name brand than anything else.  Even last season Wainwright's K rate was below average at 6.43 before his Achilles snapped and in 2014 it was another mediocre number of 7.10.  With no strikeouts to offer and ratios going the wrong way, there is pretty much nothing to recommend when it comes to Wainwright.  With his health also a problem, Wainwright may not even be worth holding right now in shallow leagues.  Again you have to be sure not to live in the past when it comes to your fantasy baseball players and Wainwright is one such example this season.
