FANTASY BASEBALL CLOSING TIME: J.J. HOOVER ALREADY ON THE BRINK, QUEUE UP JUMBO DIAZ

Things are already getting very ugly at the back end of the Cincinnati Reds bullpen as closer J.J. Hoover just finished putting the final touches on a truly ghastly outing Thursday night when he gave up 4 earned runs while achieving just one out in the team's game versus the Chicago Cubs.  Hovoer gave up 3 hits and 3 walks while getting just the one out which is pretty much batting practice stuff.  It was the kind of horrific outing that immediately brings speculation a move will be made at closer for the Reds and this is something we predicted would come when we wrote this on Hoover last Friday after he tossed away his first save chance of the season:

"J.J. Hoover:  blown save with 1 ER in .1 IP with an ERA of 6.75.  This closing experiment with Hoover is not going to last long.  Has a middling K rate that is not good for the ninth inning and total lack of experience.  Next!"

Yeah that pretty much says it all and now that brings us to Jumbo Diaz and his sparkling 1.69 ERA and 4 strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the season.  While Diaz has had some control problems in his still young career, the guy can bring the type of heat that Hoover can't as he whiffed 70 batters in just 60.1 innings last season.  The Hoover experiment was doomed to fail given his lack of strikeout stuff which his never a good fit in the ninth inning and we also have to so far question his mentality for the gig as well given the two blowups he has had.  Either way Diaz is a name to add where available for the inevitable promotion.
