FANTASY BASEBALL CLOSING TIME: GET TO KNOW CALEB COTHAM PROSPECTIVE CINCY CLOSER

Another day and another disaster of an outing for Cincinnati Reds closer J.J. Hoover on Tuesday.  Already embattled coming into the appearance, Hoover proceeded to give up two earned runs in .2 IP to raise his ERA to 15.19.  After the game manager Bryan Price finally gave in and refused to say if Hoover was his closer going forward.  While it happened maybe a bit faster than anticipated, we sounded the alarm on Hoover going back to this past winter.  The biggest issue we had with Hoover was his mediocre 7.00-ish K/9 which is not a good number for the ninth inning where missing bats is the number 1 requirement.  Hoover has gotten tattooed from the start and so there is no shock that Price is contemplating a change.  Now we have to figure out who could step into the ninth inning and that is where things get complicated.  About ten days ago Jumbo Diaz looked like a possibly solution due to his high K Rate but he has gotten hit around pretty good to start the season as well so scratch that.  Instead we now turn our attention to Caleb Cotham who right now looks like the best option.  Cotham certainly has pitched better then anyone else in the Cincy bullpen so far as he carries around 8 scoreless innings on the season.  While he did get hit very hard during his small stint with the New York Yankees a year ago (6.52 ERA), the 28-year-old minor league veteran posted a nice 2.21 ERA at Triple-A last season with 61 K's in just 57 IP.  That is a ratio that would seem to work in the ninth inning and Cotham's hot start is in his favor.  He would be the hedge bet right now over Tony Cingrani who was mauled in 2015.  Either way Hoover looks like he will be added to Sean Doolittle as early season closer flameouts.
