FANTASY BASEBALL INJURY FALLOUT: LANCE McCULLERS ON ICE TO BEGIN 2016

As expected, the Houston Astros confirmed initial speculation that starter Lance McCullers will begin the 2016 season on the disabled list due to the bout of shoulder soreness he came down with after his first spring outing.  The hard-throwing McCullers came into spring training as one of the more hyped young starters in the game and rightfully so due to his high 90's fastball that elicits a ton of strikeouts and his terrific 2015 debut that resulted in a tidy 3.22 ERA and 9.24 K/9 at the age of only 21.  The former 2012 first round pick seemed destined for greatness and he is still well on that path as the 2016 draws near.  However the bum shoulder will interrupt the proceedings for a bit despite the fact an MRI showed no structural issues or any kind of damage.  That is the best news of all here but it is a minor annoyance that McCullers can't answer the bell right out of the gate.  And even more concerning is that McCullers had some arm trouble last season as well that necessitated a "break" after the innings began to pile up.  So as we sit here today, those who have not drafted can knock McCullers down a few spots and even though no damage was found in the shoulder, issues with that joint always tend to crop back up at a moment's notice.  This makes owning McCullers quite volatile despite the allure of his ace-like ability.  The best scenario we can wish for out of here is that McCullers misses only a start or two and this is plausible as long as there are no setbacks.  The ceiling is still very high here and 29 starts from McCullers could still lead to number 1 ace production.
