FANTASY BASEBALL INJURY FALLOUT: GERRIT COLE FIRST ACE-LEVEL PITCHER TO COME UP LAME

With spring training just getting underway, we were reminded of how no single player in fantasy baseball is without risk as it was revealed on Friday that Pittsburgh Pirates ace starter Gerrit Cole is only allowed to throw off flat ground due to soreness in his rib cage which goes back to mid-January.  While no alarm bells were being rung by anyone in the Pittsburgh front office, it is always disconcerting when a guy with such a high draft price and who has such lofty expectations is dealing with a physical ailment already.  Also the rib cage is right in the same neighborhood as the oblique which as you are well familiar with, is one of those awful injuries that tend to linger.  Still this is something that bears watching as Cole comes off a dominant 2015 campaign when he finally put all his vast talent together to pitch to a 2.60 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and struck out 202 batters in 208 innings.  Right now you can keep Cole where he is in your fantasy baseball draft rankings but if he doesn't start throwing by next week, there is cause for alarm.
