2016 FANTASY BASEBALL PLAYER ANAYZER: HISASHI IWAKUMA SP LOS ANGELES DODGERS

While trying to make that jump into playoff contention, the Seattle Mariners made sure to keep one key piece intact when they re-signed veteran Japanese strater Hisashi Iwakuma to a three-year deal over the weekend.  The 34-year-old stays into the number 2 spot in the Mariners rotation as he looks to continue what has quietly been a very good career in the States.  With that said, let's dig in and find out what he could provide his fantasy baseball owners in 2016.

Having made his debut in 2012 and having spent his four-year major league career with the Seattle Mariners, Iwakuma has been an annual asset in fantasy baseball leagues due to his very good ratios, solid K rate, and always affordable draft price.  One only has to look at his yearly ERA's to get an appreciation of how solid Iwakuma has been:

2012:  3.16
2013:  2.66
2014:  3.52
2015:  3.54

Those are terrific ratios no doubt and again Iwakuma has been solid elsewhere with a tremendous career WHIP of 1.08.  In addition, Iwakuma has posted K rates in the mid-7.00 range each year of his career which while not in blow batters away territory, it still a very good place to be in terms of being a fantasy baseball starter.

In looking forward to 2016, there seems to be no letup when it comes to Iwakuma.  Yes we do have to worry a bit about his age as he turns 35 in April but his 7.70 K/9 last season was the second highest of his career.  Iwakuma also was very good during the second half of last season when he posted a 3.05 ERA and 1.02 WHIP which again shows no let up in his stuff.  He remains in a prime pitching ballpark this season with the Mariners which is also significant and he has not had much in the way of arm trouble either.  Once again the draft price will be cheap enough relative to the good numbers and that makes Iwakuma a terrific source for your SP 3.

2016 PROJECTION:  14-9 3.44 ERA 1.09 WHIP 165 K
