FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: REDS LOOKING TOWARD COMPLETE REBUILD

By Michael Wong

Boca Raton, Fla.--The Cincinnati Reds are taking center stage during the third day of the Winter Meetings here in Florida, making it known that they aim for a major rebuild of the team and that any and all veterans are available.  After dealing Mike Leake to the San Francisco Giants last summer, the Reds thought they had a deal with the New York Mets for outfielder Jay Bruce.  The latter though pulled out and got Yoenis Cespedes instead but GM Walt Jocketty is already putting it out there that Bruce, Aroldis Chapman, and Brandon Phillips are all available.  In addition, Todd Frazier can even be had if the Reds get back top flight prospect arms.

The latest rumor is that the Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are talking about both Bruce and Phillips.  Phillips has to approve of any deal, while Bruce does not have that right.  The market for Chapman is cooler as there is a flood of available closers both free (Joakim Soria) and via trade (Andrew Miller, Zach Britton, David Robertson, Mark Melancon).

-The Tampa Bay Rays and infielder Logan Forsythe should have a contract extension worked out shortly.

-Both Chris Iannetta and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are being viewed as very cheap catcher options.  The Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, and Baltimore Orioles are all in on these two.

-Speaking of catchers, the Mets got a few inquiries about both Travis D'Arnaud and more with Kevin Plawecki.  The Mets might use D'Arnaud at first base at times this season, in order to get the developing Plawecki into the lineup more.

-Cameron Maybin and Nick Swisher are both being peddled by the Atlanta Braves.  Maybin is drawing interest and the Braves don't view him as a prime piece of their future.

-As we said all along, Brian Cashman said Greg Bird will begin 2016 in the minors if Mark Teixeira is healthy.
