FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: CLOSERS AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE

By Michael Wong

Boca Raton, Fla.-Closers, closers everywhere.  Not only are the Detroit Tigers trying to reunite with free agent Joakim Soria to man the ninth inning again, there are a slew of major league teams that are dangling their closers around the league via trade.  And these are not mediocre options by any means as David Robertson, Andrew Miller, and Mark Melancon have all been floated around here.  In addition, the Cincinnati Reds are once again dangling Aroldis Chapman, something they have done for the better part of two years now.  No word on what each of the respective teams are asking for but the closer market is already taking shape.  Also regarding Soria, the Boston Red Sox have contacted his agent as they are looking for closer insurance in case Koji Uehara is toast.

-The Detroit Tigers have been the most aggressive team so far as their GM Al Avila came out and said the team will pursue free agent SP Hisahi Iwakuma.  While Iwakuma is getting up there in age, he has quietly been one of the very best starters in the game the last four seasons, with him being particularly dominant the second half of last season.

-The Kansas City Royals are doing whatever they can to re-sign Ben Zobrist.  They already have told Zobrist's reps that they want to be given a chance to match any offer.

-New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman threw cold water on the team's reported interest in Daniel Murphy but NOT Jeff Samardzjia.

-Alexei Ramirez is finding a decent market as the very shallow shortstop position is the prime reason for this.  The New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, and Chicago White Sox are all involved.

-Speaking of the Mets, they are looking everywhere for a power eighth inning arm and have some interest in Melancon.  They also have engaged San Diego for closer Craig Kimbrel.

-Jay Bruce is looking like a goner as GM Walt Jocketty has made it a point to talk up his availability.

-Jurickson Profar is a name that has popped up here but the Texas Rangers will not sell low.
