FANTASY BASEBALL TRADE FALLOUT: LEONYS MARTIN GETS FRESH START IN SEATTLE

The Seattle Mariners traded for setup man and potential 2016 closer Joaquin Benoit last week which gave the team the chance to deal from a surplus of bullpen arms.  The result was seen on Monday as the Mariners dealt away lefty reliever Tom Wilhelmsen to the Texas Rangers in a buy low move to acquire outfielder Leonys Martin.  The speedy Martin had some decent expectations attached to his name going into last season due to the fact he was going to get a chance to lead off for a very good lineup and in a major offensive park.  With the speed to steal bases and some developing power, there was some talk Martin could go 15/30.  Well Martin fell incredibly short of those numbers and was demoted to the minors as a result horrific .219 average with 4 home runs and 10 steals in 237 at-bats.  Turning 28 in March, Martin is pretty much done in terms of ceiling and that makes him nothing more than a late round speculative add.  We have seen a number of fresh start cases turning out well though which means Martin at least should be on your radar to see how he takes to Seattle.  With a K rate historically over 20.0 percent though, Martin just doesn't hit enough to be worth using in anything but AL-only formats early on in the season.
