FANTASY BASEBALL INJURY FALLOUT: ALBERT PUJOLS OUT 4.5 MONTHS AFTER FOOT SURGERY

We are only days into the Major League Baseball Hot Stove Season but already there have been two significant injuries that are downgrading the fantasy baseball stocks of both Cleveland Indians outfielder Michael Brantley and now Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols.  While we discussed Brantley yesterday in terms of him now missing the next 5-6 months (return sometime in April) after shoulder surgery, the new one worth mentioning was the foot surgery Pujols had which will keep him out until sometime in April.  Pujols is expected to miss four-and-a-half months after fixing the plantar plate in his foot.  This was a strong reminder of how Pujols has been hobbled over the last few years with plantar fasciitis but it seemed that was a non-issue in 2015 when the guy engineered a fantastic season by hitting 40 home runs and driving in 95.  As great as those numbers were though, Pujols batted just .244 as he is now clearly entering into the pure slugger portion of his career as he gets set to turn 37.  Age has robbed Pujols of his ability to hit for average but the power obviously is still immense.  Now though Pujols will not return to the field until late March and since he needs a few weeks to get ready, a mid-April return is the earliest he will get back to the Angels.  That means Pujols needs to be downgraded when it comes to 2016 fantasy baseball and we would plant him firmly behind Adrian Gonzalez, Eric Hosmer, Prince Fielder, and Freddie Freeman in addition to the obvious top names.  We are not big boosters of Pujols anyways and that was even before the foot issue given his age and sliding numbers.
