FANTASY BASEBALL TRADE DEADLINE BREAKING NEWS: METS DISCUSSED BOTH TYLER CLIPPARD AND JOAQUIN BENOIT SUNDAY NIGHT

After seeing closer Jeurys Familia blow his second straight save and setup man Bobby Parnell throw away last Thursday afternoon's game, the New York Mets engaged in trade talks with the Oakland A's for Tyler Clippard and the San Diego Padres for Joaquin Benoit Sunday night.  GM Sandy Alderson has been in contact with A's GM Billy Beane almost daily, first regarding Ben Zobrist and now more for Clippard.  With the Mets having dealt for infield help in Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson, Alderson has cooled on Zobrist at the moment and instead is trying to work out a deal for Clippard who will give the team a top eighth inning setup guy.  Meanwhile the Mets and Padres broke down in talks for Justin Upton when they asked for top shortstop prospect Amed Rosario but they re-entered into discussion regarding Benoit who will cost less.

Analysis:  The Mets continue to be linked to a host of players and it makes sense they want to shore up the shaky middle relief.  Both Clippard and Benoit make terrific sense and adds another talking point as the trade deadline draws nearer.

  2. Fernando Rodriguez has the most live arm to take over but the recent addition of Edward Mujica and his experience could make him the guy.
