FANTASY BASEBALL TRADE DEADLINE FALLOUT: MIKE LEAKE GETS BALLPARK BOOST IN SAN FRANCISCO

When we use then term "smoke and mirrors" in discussing a pitcher, what we mean there is that a guy excels despite not having a good fastball or what you would label as decent "strikeout stuff."  we have seen many examples of guys putting up yearly ERA's under 4.00 and maybe even lower despite K rates that sail along under the 7.00 mark.  One such guy over the last few seasons has been Cincinnati Reds veteran Mike Leake who was dealt away to the San Francisco Giants late Thursday night.  Leake goes to San Francisco with a solid 3.56 ERA and he is coming off a truly dominant stretch where he has given up only 2 runs in his last four starts spanning 30 innings.  All this despite the fact Leake has struck out only 90 batters in 136.2 innings this season.  And despite the fact Leake operates in one of the best power ballparks in the major leagues.  The best part of the this trade for Leake now is the fact he goes from the offensive haven that is Cincinnati's home park to one of the best pitcher's parks in San Francisco.  Thus his already solid numbers figure to go even lower in his new home.  When evaluating Leake as a pitcher, the guy possesses terrific control with a 2.24 BB/9 and an even better home run rate at 0.92 which is doubly impressive considering his former home park.  The 5.93 K rate is ugly no doubt but Leake doesn't make things harder on himself by giving up home runs and walking guys and thus he has kept his ERA in the high 3.00-range as a result.  He should be a very solid addition to the San Francisco staff and thus continue being a daily starter in terms of fantasy baseball terms.
