2015 FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: GARRET RICHARS SP LOS ANGELES ANGELS

A major hurdle was cleared by Los Angeles Angels ace SP Garret Richards on Thursday as it was learned he would be cleared medically to begin bullpen sessions early next week.  Richards of course has been making his way back from a horrific torn patellar knee injury suffered in the midst of his huge breakout 2014 campaign.  Despite missing the last five weeks of the season, Richards put himself into fantasy baseball ace territory by pitching to a stellar 2.61 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out 164 batters in only 168.2 innings.  This after Richards struggled (and badly at times) as a starter the three seasons prior.  The two keys that allowed Richards to have that breakout in 2014 was the fact he finally got his previously ugly walk rate under control and he also successfully figured out how to use his 98-mph fastball to generate strikeouts which was a previous issue.  The result was the ace numbers he put forth until the injury which put a damper on his overall season.  The initial diagnosis was that Richards could be out until the midway point of 2015 but he rehabbed successfully to the point that he now could be on the mound Opening Day for the Angels which is unbelievable considering where he was a few months ago.  The result here is that Richards' days of being a prime draft value play could be coming to an end soon as this news makes the rounds.  I was hoping to steal Richards at the draft table but that may become more futile as we go on.  As far as the ability is concerned, Richards' numbers checked out last season with regards to advanced metrics and as long as he is healthy, another ace or SP 2 campaign is likely.  Draft aggressively here as Richards looks like he could be supplying a full season by the looks of this latest news.
