2015 FANTASY BASEBALL INJURY FALLOUT: KENLEY JANSEN REMINDER TO AVOID CLOSERS EARLY

Not even a day into spring training and the Los Angeles Dodgers are reeling from the news that All-Star fireballing closer Kenley Jansen is out the next 8-12 weeks after having surgery on his left foot to remove a growth.  The timeline has Jansen not making his debut until sometime in early May which means saves are out there for the taking the first month of the season.  Also for those who haven't drafted yet, push down Jansen past the top ten closers due to the fact he already is down one month of potential saves.  Again this is a strong reminder of how foolish it is to draft a closer early.  While an injury can strike any player at any position, losing a high middle round pick on a closer is a major blow due to the fact that the rest of your league is collecting points on the hitters and pitchers you took in that particular round and in more than one category unlike the ninth inning men who only really impact saves when it comes to the standings in standard setups.  These guys are specialists and their fraternity if filled with turnover that claims at least 40 percent of the Opening Day closers by the end of the season.  Again look for value when trying to pick up saves and use late middle round picks there.

As far as what happens now for the Dodgers, it looks like Joel Peralta would be the top choice to ascend toward the closer throne.  Peralta has been a solid setup man the last few seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and he has proven he can close in a pinch.  However with the Dodgers no doubt having major championship aspirations, we find it impossible to believe that they won't look at free agents Rafael Soriano or Francisco Rodriguez.  With saves now there for the taking, it would make sense for both parties to get something accomplished soon.  Meanwhile Jansen can become a value pick if he falls to the middle rounds and it would be there where I would consider making a move on him due to his tremendous ability when he is in one piece.
