FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: ASTROS BRING ABOARD LUKE GREGERSON

By Michael Wong

San Diego, CA.--Jon Lester is finally off the board which means some other names are taking center stage Wednesday as the winter meetings continue.

-The Houston Astros struck out on both Andrew Miller and David Robertson for the back end of their bullpen but they got a consolation prize in signing top setup man Luke Gregerson to a three-year deal worth $18.5 million.  Having posted a career 2.75 ERA, Gregerson right now looks like the favorite for saves right now for the closer-needy Astros.

-The New York Mets continue to try and unload Dillon Gee and the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants are biting.  The Mets wanted to move Gee to the Seattle Mariners for Brad Miller but so far no dice.

-The Cincinnati Reds seems serious about moving All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman and they have gotten plenty of calls about the Cuban fireaballer.

-The Pittsburgh Pirates should announce the re-signing of Francisco Liriano shortly and they continue to engage top setup man Pat Neschek.  They are getting stiff competition from the St. Louis Cardinals who are considered the favorites.

-Ervin Santana is shooting for the moon in asking for a five-year deal but so far teams are only looking to five him one or two.

-The Tampa Bay Rays seem to already be souring on Wil Myers as they are listening to offers.

-Speaking of the Cardinals, they also have looked into Rickie Weeks who the Brewers will give away.  They Brewers are fully going with Scooter Gennett at second base again for 2015 so they have no incentive to hold Weeks.

-Dayan Viciedo is a name that keeps cropping up.  The White Sox will eventually move him and the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles are interested.

-The Boston Red Sox will now move toward trading for Cole Hamels after losing out on Jon Lester.  I can tell you in speaking to a Red Sox official that they were stunned to lose Lester to the Cubs.  And Theo Epstein of all people.  In addition to Hamels, the Red Sox are talking with Wei-Yin Chen, Justin Masterson, and Wide Miley.
