FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: QUALIFYING OFFERS TURNED DOWN AS EXPECTED

By Michael Wong

Phoenix, AZ.--More news as always as the first installment of the Winter Meetings continue to heat up.

-As expected, all of the qualifying offers are being turned down which has gone with the trend since the system was first implemented.  So far no major league player has ever accepted the one-year qualifying offers and this year's best chance was Michael Cuddyer who was given the offer despite missing most of 2014 with injury.  Cuddyer still rejected the over $15 million offer and instead signed a two-year deal with the New York Mets.  Some notable rejections:

Russell Martin
Victor Martinez
Hanley Ramirez
David Robertson

All of the prime free agents listed above rejected the offer and are free to sign with anyone.

-The Boston Red Sox have inquired about SP Justin Masterson who comes off a truly horrific 2014 season where he was hit hard all year long.  Overall Masterson finished with a 5.88 ERA in a season split between the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals.  Masterson might come as cheap as a one-year deal for a guy who has had some recent success at the major league level.

-Despite his age, Torii Hunter is a popular name being discussed here.

-Just hours after signing Michael Cuddyer, the New York Mets have begun preliminary talks with the Colorado Rockies about what it would take to acquire Troy Tulowitzki.  This will be interesting as the Rockies want to get out from under Tulo's contract but also don't want to give him away. Right now two days into the Winter Meetings and the Mets shockingly are the most active team out there.
