FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: JORDAN ZIMMERMAN FIRMLY ON THE BLOCK

By Michael Wong

Phoenix, AZ.--The biggest news of the evening here are the reports that the Chicago Cubs are in talks "past the preliminary stage" with the Washington Nationals regarding SP Jordan Zimmerman.  The Cubs are pushing hard in all corners of the Winter Meetings after brining Joe Maddon aboard as manager and Zimmerman is apparently a pitcher he likes a lot.  The asking price we hear is either Javier Baez or Starlin Castro.

Speaking of Castro, the New York Mets are also weighing whether to make a run here or not as they realize it would take top pitching prospect Noah Syndegaard to make a deal.  The rapid development of Jacob DeGrom is allowing the Mets to use Syndegaard as a trade chip this offseason as the rotation is currently stacked.

-There was talk circulating tonight that Jon Lester will end up back with the Red Sox.  That is after they sign Pablo Sandoval which again is almost a given from what I am hearing.

-The Baltimore Orioles offered Nelson Cruz a three-year deal but the player wants five.  Both sides could settle on a four-year deal but the money has to be ironed out more.  Meanwhile they Orioles reportedly were talking to Billy Butler but both sides put cold water on that.

-The Atlanta Braves want to a bad contract swap of outfielder B.J. Upton.  Good luck with that.  In addition, the Mets put it out to a Braves rep that they would deal Syndegaard for Justin Upton at a moment's notice.

-Andrew Miller can pretty much name his price as half of baseball is after him.  It will be interesting to see if Miller can find a closing gig somewhere as his stuff is certainly worth of pitching in the ninth inning.

-The Nationals have told SS Asdrubal Cabrera not to sign anywhere before checking with them last.

More later.
