FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: YANKS CALLED ANGELS ABOUT HOWIE KENDRICK

By Michael Wong

Phoenix, AZ.--Last day of the first installment of the Winter Meetings and more action to get to.

-The New York Yankees are starting to get into these Winter Meetings as always, having already dealt backup catcher Francisco Cervelli to the Pittsburgh Pirates and now having called the Los Angeles Angels about second baseman Howie Kendrick.  The Yanks have looked almost everywhere for infield help which could be a clear indication they don't want to rely much on Alex Rodriguez.  If Kendrick comes into the fold via trade, that also could mean they won't re-sign Chase Headley.

-Speaking of the Pirates, they could be losing catcher Russell Martin to the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The last 24 hours have seen a ratcheting up of talks between the two sides who could do a reunion if the Pirates don't pony up.

-Cuban import Yosmany Tomas could sign a major league contract by the weekend according to multiple sources.

-The Baltimore Orioles are looking closely at A.J. Burnett.  They figure to intensify their search for pitching after bringing back outfielder Nick Markakis which is expected shortly.  Look for Markakis to get a four-year deal from the O's.

-There is increasing talk that Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels behind the scenes is trying to get a one-way ticket out of town.  Hamels apparently is unhappy that the Phillies are trying to deal anything that is not nailed down and is not interested in a rebuilding process.

-The Detroit Tigers increased their team speed by trading for Toronto Blue Jays speedy outfielder Anthony Gose.  The Blue Jays must feel confident about their chances of re-signing Melky Cabrera.

More later.
