FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: RED SOX THE "CLEAR FAVORTIES" FOR JON LESTER

By Michael Wong

Phoenix, AZ.--On and on it goes.  Let's get to the latest.

-By now the news has settled in that the Detroit Tigers re-signed 1B/DH Victor Martinez to a four-year deal worth $68 million.  The Tigers clearly made it their top priority to bring back Martinez into the fold and they certainly paid a bundle for a guy who is turning 36.  However I was told the Tigers feared the New York Yankees making a strong play on Martinez and thus they struck first.  The fallout here from what I also am being told is that the Tigers will now push hard to sign free agent closer David Robertson.  Robertson already turned down the qualifying offer from the Yankees and up to six teams have already made contact.  By the looks of things, the Yankees will have to pay big time to keep Robertson which may not make total sense since they have a ready-made replacement in Dellin Betances sitting in the bullpen.

-According to a trusted Boston Red Sox source, the team should be considered the favorites not only to sign 3B Pablo Sandoval but also to bring back SP Jon Lester.  Despite the Red Sox trading Lester to the Oakland A's during the July 31 deadline, both team and player have no ill feelings toward one another over what went down.  In fact Lester was appreciative that the Red Sox gave him a chance to make a postseason run with the A's.  My source says that Lester is very interested in a reunion but might wait to see if they sign Sandoval first.

In addition to Sandoval and Lester, the Red Sox are also in talks with the agent for relief pitching gem Andrew Miller.  Miller of course was a former top Red Sox pitching prospect who never panned out with them in the rotation.  Miller however is getting intense play from almost a dozen teams according to multiple sources.

-Alex Avila has no more of a future with the Tigers and the team is already listening to offers.  The Red Sox have touched base here as well.

-ESPN New York's Adam Rubin says the Yankees are not likely going to land SS Elvis Andrus.  I have heard the same and instead they are monitoring the Alexei Ramirez situation.

-For the second offseason in a row, the New York Mets are calling the Seattle Mariners on young SS Brad Miller.  Miller was terrible last season for the Mariners but he still carries some solid potential that the Mets want to buy low on.

More later.
