FANTASY BASEBALL STATUS REPORT: KOLTEN WONG 2B ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong has certainly run the gamut this season with regards to his standing in fantasy baseball circles.  A popular sleeper both in 2013 and prior to 2014 due to good leadoff skills and decent enough pop, Wong made the Cardinals out of camp despite not completely impressive work in spring training.  Wong would fall flat on his face in April however, hitting only .221 with 0 home runs and 5 RBI.  Clearly needing more work on the farm, Wong went back to work on his swing in order to rediscover the ability that made him such a solid prospect in the first place.  Well like we have seen countless times before, the jolt of being sent back to the minors seemed to do the trick for Wong as he showed when he came back up in May by hitting .333 with 5 stolen bases and 7 runs.  While Wong did take another step back in June by hitting .103, July and now August have served as the launching point to his career.  Take a look at the numbers:

July:  5 HR 9 RBI 13 R 6 SB .284
August:  3 HR 6 RBI 5 R 2 SB .269

Needless to say, Won's July was Ian Kinsler-esque and would make him a near top 5-7 guy in fantasy baseball terms.  And Wong is picking up in August where he left off in July as he comes off a two-homer game on Thursday.  That brought his season numbers to a .247 average with 9 home runs and 31 RBI.  In addition Wong has scored 32 runs and stolen 17 bases.  Yes the average is still low but Wong has been dragged down by the ugly April and June.  The fact he can hit home runs and steal bases at second base is tremendous and makes Wong someone to target off the wire if he is still sitting there.  The ability has hidden under the radar a bit while Wong went through some initial struggles like so many other guys before him.  However he looks primed for a big finish to the season and Wong could very well be cementing his status as a top ten guy for the 2015 campaign.
