FANTASY SPORTS BOSS MAILBAG: KEEPER QUESTIONS ALREADY

Fantasy baseball keeper leagues are coming out of hibernation with many owners having to set their protected players as we head toward the drafting weeks.  Today we delve into the mailbag and take a look at a typical question on that front from Long Island's Corey Glassberg:

"this is a standard 16 man 3 keeper league standard points ( i won last year )

choose 3 to keep for 2014

paul goldschmidt
freddie freeman
josh donaldson
josh hamilton
gincarlo stanton
matt latos
h iwakuma
craig kimbrel

thanks as always mike and good luck this year."

-All right in looking into this group of players, the quick obvious pick is Paul Goldschmidt who is a sire fire first round pick in all formats.  Next I immediately selected Freddie Freeman as I love using a second top first baseman to fill my UTIL or CI spot since power is becoming so rare in today's game.  The real debate was over the third players which I ultimately decided to go with Giancarlo Stanton.  I would never keep a closer and wouldn't go with a starter unless he was a top five type among Kershaw, Wainwright, Scherzer, Darvish, or Hernandez.  Hamilton is fading quick which I said prior to last season and Donaldson is not even close to being keeper-worthy despite me liking him as well.  Thus we are left with Stanton who I am not in love with but whose name value should allow Corey to get something for him in a trade.  The Marlins lineup is a joke and we all saw how rough it was for Stanton last season without any fastballs heading his way.
