FANTASY BASEBALL BREAKING NEWS: TIGERS ACE JUSTIN VERLANDER UNDERGOES CORE MUSCLE SURGERY

Detroit Tigers ace SP Justin Verlander was forced to undergo core muscle surgery to correct an injury to the area suffered during a December workout.  GM Dave Dombrowski said on Thursday that Verlander will need six weeks of recovery time from the surgery which puts his return toward the latter part of February.  That also would mean Verlander would be behind the other pitchers in camp by about two weeks.  Dombrowski also said he fully expected Verlander to be ready for Opening Day.

Analysis:  Well that is not such good news.  Verlander disturbed me in 2013 as his hit rate went up along with his walks which made his WHIP a mess.  I have said for a number of years that all those crazy workload seasons by Verlander will eventually catch up with him and I believe that is starting to happen a bit, although not to the degree we are seeing out of C.C. Sabbathia and Dan Haren.  While Verlander has about 5 weeks to get himself ready for the season based on the 6 week timeline, if there area any setbacks than we could be looking at him not ready to go on Opening Day.  While I would never pay the sticker price on Verlander given how deep pitching is, if I were inclined to get an ace early, he would be one I would be leery of.
