2014 FANTASY BASEBALL ISSUES: CARLOS SANTANA ADDING 3B ELIGIBILITY, YAN GOMES TO PLAY EVERYDAY

With spring training just a few weeks away, Cleveland Indians catcher/1B Carlos Santana dropped a surprise to the fantasy baseball community when he spoke about how he will be moving to third base for the 2014 season.  Splitting time between catcher and 1B since coming up to the majors, Santana's awful defense behind the plate and the team's desire to preserve his body have led the team to think about ways to set him up somewhere else on the field.  Well Santana has been practicing at third base all offseason and finally admitted Friday that he was in fact moving.  The fallout from this means that Santana becomes the first catcher in recent memory to also carry eligibility at 2 more positions (1B, 3B).  This move also means Yan Gomes will serve as the team's everyday catcher which should be intriguing to possible fantasy baseball owners after he hit 11 home runs and batted .294 in only 293 at-bats last season.  Gomes moves up a few spots in the catcher rankings while Santana also adds value due to his increased eligibility.  The key here is whether or not Santana will get ANY work behind the plate so that he can retain eligibility there for next season as well.  Be that as it may, Santana is still the number 4 catcher in our rankings behind Buster Posey, Wilin Rosario, and Brian McCann.

  1. And Yan Gomes? Where would he fall in the C rankings? Without looking at his advanced stats it seems he would have J. Luckily appeal but tempered expectations with a whole season's wear and tear to think about.

  2. Drop the average to .265 and give him 15-20 homers.
