2014 FANTASY BASEBALL FIRST BASEMAN I LIKE/HATE MORE THAN YOU

Today I delve into the first baseman for 2014 fantasy baseball that I like/hate more than you.  Let's take a look at who made the cut among these big boppers.

1B I LIKE MORE THAN YOU

Edwin Encarnacion:  I have met some resistance from some of you when I called Encarnacion a first round pick for 2014 drafts.  Well my answer is why wouldn't he be?  Not only does Encarnacion qualify both at 1B and 3B, he has hit 42 and 36 home runs the last two seasons to go along with 110 and 104 RBI.  Not only that but Encarnacion stole 13 and 7 bases during those two seasons which made him the rare five category first baseman.  At a still young 31, Encarnacion absolutely is a first round pick in my opinion and someone I would do cartwheels over if I can get him in Round 2.

Freddie Freeman:  Love this kid.  I can tell you right now I will do whatever I can to make sure Freeman is on all of my teams this season.  Ideally I want to try and sneak Freeman in as my UTIL or CIT bat and I have no problems drafting two first baseman among my first three or four picks given the extreme pop and RBI that comes from this group.  As far as Freeman is concerned, it is only a matter of time before he reaches the 30 home run mark and he already is a 100-plus RBI guy.  A high K rate might make hitting more than .285 a reach but other than that the sky is the limit.

Adrian Gonzalez:  Many have moved away from Gonzalez due to the fact he no longer is a 40 home run bat after invasive shoulder surgery back in 2011 sapped some of his pop.  Despite this, Gonzalez is still a .300/100-plus RBI/25 HR bat which is nothing to sneeze at.  The best part is that Gonzalez comes cheaper than he should now given the fact those owners I noted earlier are looking elsewhere in incorrectly thinking the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman is washed up.  Far from it as Gonzalez is still in his prime and ready for another nice 2014 season.

1B I HATE MORE THAN YOU

Albert Pujols:  This is not stating the recent obvious as I have gone on record the last two seasons telling you to avoid the diminishing Pujols.  Well he followed my script in predicting the falloff that came.  In addition to the opinion that Pujols is older than his listed 34, his body is breaking down everywhere ranging from his ankle, to his knee, up to his hip.  Put it all together and Pujols had his worst season ever in 2013.  He has proclaimed himself fully healthy going into 2014 but don't let the name brand overshadow the current fading edition the guy is.

Ryan Howard:  This is another guy I have pounded on the last four seasons which goes back to my original argument that big bodied guys like Howard decline quicker than other players.  Three straight rough seasons later and Howard is now worthy of a backup 1B spot.

Mark Trumbo:  There is no doubt Trumbo knows how to hit baseballs out of ballparks and he has nice versatility as well but the fact of the matter is there are a few red flags overall with his game.  The biggest is a very high K rate that sinks Trumbo's average to very shaky area codes and takes some of the luster off of his power stats.  Not for me.

There you have it.  Let me know some first baseman you like or hate more than me or others.
