We delve into the second base fraternity today as we get into another 2014 fantasy baseball draft debate.  Right behind the easy consensus number 1 Robinson Cano, we find two comparable players in Dustin Pedroia and Jason Kipnis who fantasy baseball owners are going to have a tough time deciding on who to pick over the other. With that said let's compare Pedroia and Kipnis in the five standard ROTO categories to see who wins that debate.

RUNS:  In his first two full years, Kipnis has yet to score even 90 runs while Pedroia went for 91 last season and has three years of 100-plus in that category.  The Red Sox have a much more potent offense behind Pedroia than does Kipnis so he gets the nod.
ADVANTAGE:  Dustin Pedroia

HOME RUNS:  Kipnis has hit 31 home runs the last two season while Pedroia has cleared the outfield fence a combined 24 times during that same span.  Kipnis also has yet to reach his power prime so a run at 20 is possible while Pedroia has reached the age where no more improvement is likely.
ADVANTAGE:  Jason Kipnis

RBI:  Both guys drove in exactly 84 runs last season and in going back a year before that, Kipnis came out on top 76-65.  This one is very close but Kipnis gets the slight nod, especially when you consider the possible home run growth he has left.
ADVANTAGE:  Jason Kipnis

AVERAGE:  Pedroia wins this one easily as he is one of the best pure hitters in the game while Kipnis has an extremely high strikeout rate that will make hitting .300 a pipedream.  Pedroia on the other hand works the count, takes walks, and doesn't strike out and is a near lock to hit .300
ADVANTAGE:  Dustin Pedroia

STOLEN BASES:  While Pedroia is an underrated base stealer who has reached the 20 mark in four separate seasons, Kipnis takes this one easily on the heels of back-to-back 30-plus steal campaigns.  Kipnis has the youth on his side as well and is the better speed guy overall.
ADVANTAGE:  Jason Kipnis

WINNER:  Jason Kipnis

As you can see Kipnis comes out on top slightly.  Many will go with the proven veteran production of Pedroia but Kipnis has more upside and does come out on top in three of the five categories.  He is your guy.
