FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: TIGERS BRING ABOARD JOBA

By Michael Wong

Lake Buena Vista, Fla.--Last report before I leave Florida.  Let's get to it.

-The Detroit Tigers have been interested in Joba Chamberlain for awhile and even going back to the middle of last season were entertaining the idea of making a trade for the talented but erratic reliever.  Well the Tigers finally got their man on Thursday as they reportedly signed Chamberlain to a contract of which we are still waiting on the terms.  Chamberlain will serve as a setup man to new closer Joe Nathan.

-The Baltimore Orioles are privately telling people that they will sign Grant Balfour to be their new closer.  This has legs to it as Balfour wants a closing gig and the Orioles have one to give after dealing away Jim Johnson.

-The Pittsburgh Pirates re-signed utility infielder Clint Barmes.  Terms were not disclosed.

-The Kansas City Royals were offering outfielder Justin Maxwell to the Los Angeles Dodgers for SS Dee Gordon.

-The Philadelphia Phillies signed free agent SO Robert Hernandez.  No terms yet on the deal.

-We leave the Winter Meetings with no contracts for Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez, Bronson Arroyo, and Ervin Santana.  Once one of them signs, than the rest will fall like dominos.

-Shin-Soo Choo had a tough Winter Meetings as the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers publicly pulled out of talks.  The Rangers however will come back in if Choo is willing to take a five-year deal.

-Jeff Samardzjia was not dealt at the Meetings which was a bit of a surprise.  The Atlanta Braves have really jumped heavily into those talks however.

-Like I reported yesterday, the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets met again to talk about 1B Ike Davis.

-Both the New York Yankees and Rangers are interested in signing infielder Michael Young.

-The San Francisco Giants made a nice signing in outfielder/first baseman Mike Morse for one-year and $6 million.

-The Minnesota Twins continue to talk with Arroyo and Mike Pelfrey.  Also Paul Maholm is another name that has come up.  They already have signed Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco.

-The San Diego Padres and Yankees are in a spirited battle for RP Joaquin Benoit.  With the Yankees Benoit would have a chance to close.

It was fun as always.
