FANTASY BASEBALL WINTER MEETINGS REPORT: JUSTIN MASTERSON IN YANKEES' SIGHTS

By Michael Wong

Lake Buena Vista, Fla.--The New York Yankees continue to be the most active team this offseason, with their latest pursuit apparently being Cleveland Indians ace SP Justin Masterson.  Coming off a big 2013 season, Masterson is pricing himself out of Cleveland which has opened up trade talks between the two clubs.  With C.C. Sabbathia, Ivan Nova, and the newly re-signed Hiroki Kuroda, the Yankees have two holes in their rotation that need to be filled.  In addition, the Yankees have talked to the Indians about SS Asdrubal Cabrera.

-The Seattle Mariners have been the most aggressive in the pursuit of Tampa Bay Rays ace SP David Price.

-After signing Garrett Jones to a two-year deal, the Miami Marlins are dangling outfielder Justin Ruggiano.

-The Milwaukee Brewers have talked all night with the reps for Corey Hart.  If they can't get a deal done with Hart by the end of the week, a team official indicated to me they will swing a trade for New York Mets 1B Ike Davis.

-Reports circulated last night that both the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox are out of the Matt Kemp Derby.  That leaves the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners as the main two pursuers.

-After brining aboard Mark Trumbo in a trade, the Arizona Diamondbacks are now looking at pitching.  They have talked with Matt Garza since the meetings began and also reportedly offered Joba Chamberlain a one-year deal.

-The Yankees continued with their efforts to pick up late inning relief competition for closer David Robertson.  Joaquin Benoit is squarely in the Yankees' sights and they two sides are discussing numbers.

More later.
