FANTASY BASEBALL WELCOME TO THE SHOW: GERRIT COLE SP PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Another day and another top prospect has been called up from the minors now that the Super 2 arbitration date has passed in the last week. Tuesday night will yield the first MLB start of Pittsburgh Pirates top pitching prospect Gerrit Cole, who as the number 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft.  Cole has universally been acclaimed to have ace-like stuff and his numbers at Triple-A bear this out as he comes to the majors with a 2.91 ERA and 1.06 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in 68 innings.  With that said let's take a closer look at what Cole could provide his owners the rest of the way.

While the Pirates have made it a point to say Cole is here for a trial effort in order to take pressure off of him, the fact of the matter is that he could fill a huge need for the surprisingly contending club.  Anyone who was a number 1 pick overall has immense ceiling to tap into and Cole certainly has the tools to make good at the major league level starting Tuesday.  As far as his game, Cole is already way above  average when it comes to his control.  Cole does not beat himself by giving up walks and his 4-pitch repertoire yields a below average hit rate which will make him a nice WHIP help.  As far as the K's are concerned, Cole has not been overly impressive there at Triple-A with only 47 in 68 innings which is a rate that doesn't scream power pitcher.  However Cole posted some very good K numbers while in college and someone with his arsenal will fool more than enough batters.  All in all though, what you are looking for right now with Cole is a solid ERA, very good WHIP, and decent K's.  If he does what his Triple-A numbers suggest, Cole will be a nice SP 3 addition to your staff.
